Kids and Chores

by mom on February 18, 2009

The first rule for getting your kids to help with chores is to get them used to the idea at a very young age. That is not to say to get your 1 year old to do dishes, but they can clean up their toys with assistance.

-Getting a 1 year old to tidy up after him or herself teaches a child that they are responsible to clean up the mess that they have created. Tidying can be fun by using a “tidy up song”. Assist them when they ask, but never do it for them.

-A 2 and 3 year old are interested in what mom and dad are doing and may like to assist you in your chores; such as dusting, vacuuming and baking. A 2 year old can handle a dusting rag where as a 3 year old can use a duster and may even be able to use a hand held vacuum with assistance. Both can put their snack dishes on the counter or in the sink, as long as they are using plastic dishes.

-A 3 and 4 year old can help with sorting the recycling, protecting them from sharp objects.

-By 5, they are capable of assisting with more complex chores, such as setting the table.

Making chores fun and not using them as a punishment will make your life easier when they grow into older kids and are expected to help out around the house. And that works for me! Here is a link to chore checklists for children 2-10+.
