St. Patrick’s Day was always celebrated in my home when I was a little girl. We had decorations up and wore green and maybe mom made green food. Now it’s my turn to entertain the idea of celebrating this holiday, which I hardly know a thing about.
1. First- tell the story of St. Patrick as told here. It is more exciting to celebrate when you know WHY you are celebrating!
2. Decorate- this can be done before St Patrick’s Day (if you don’t have any decorations, they can be purchased at the dollar store where they have a nice variety for a dollar). While decorating, play a game where you and your child(ren) take turns naming green objects.
3. Wear green- you can go as far as dying your hair, your child’s hair and painting your fingernails green.
4. Make green breakfast (food coloring goes a long way)- green eggs, green oatmeal, green french toast or pancakes, green milk in cereal- you get the point.
5. Make a green lunch or pack a lunch of green items for school age kids- green apples, celery, green pepper, etc.
6. Do a craft of green, for example, on Tuesday at my home daycare, we are making jewelry with green beads for ourselves or our moms.
7. Download free coloring pages with a St. Patrick’s day theme (click here)
8. Plant a seed or a bulb (symbolic of spring and will grow green). Children will enjoy watching it grow.
9. End the day with a nice green bath. Nothing will surprise your little ones more than when they step into their green bath (a little food coloring will NOT dye your child’s skin-fear not).
10. Green jammies for bed if possible.
